How long does it take to get pregnant?

How long should you "try"?

The length of time to get pregnant is different for every woman. It depends on many factors including your age, your general health, your stress level ...

According to research by the German NFP, half of couples take up to six months to conceive. After 1 year, about 70-80% of women are pregnant.

Getting pregnant in a healthy way

How to get pregnant healthily?

You would prefer to see your child wish fulfilled as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there are no miracle cures. However, we will give you some tips to help yourself and your future child:

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: eating lots of fruit and vegetables and getting enough sleep will already help you on your way.
  • Avoid alcohol and don't smoke. This, in fact, has a negative effect on you and your future child.
  • Avoid stress. It has a bad influence on your hormones and therefore on your fertility. (We are fully aware that this tip might come across as quite ironic. If you could find a way to eliminate some other stress factors in your life, that might helpt you.)
  • Exercise sufficiently.
  • Start taking folic acid in advance. This vitamin is very important for you and your baby.
  • Read the rest of this page carefully; these practical tips for getting pregnant will undoubtedly help you too.

Calculating fertile periods

When are you the most fertile?

If you want to get pregnant, understanding your fertile period is very useful. Because it is during this period that your ovulation occurs. You can recognise this phase by:
  • Your mucus discharge becoming stretchy and transparent.
  • Your libido increasing
  • You'll feel happy and full of energy.
Do you notice these changes? That's a good sign! A sperm cell survives up to 5 days in fertile mucus. This is why it is especially important to have intercourse before your ovulation. Because ovulation itself only lasts 24 hours.

So keeping track of your cycle is highly recommended.

How does an ovulation test work?

What is an ovulation test?

Curious about your most fertile days? An ovulation test reveals the exact moment when your chances of becoming pregnant are highest. An ovulation test measures the luteinising hormone (LH) in your urine. This hormone peaks just before your ovary releases an egg, so the test indicates when your fertility is at its peak.

How it works? Simply dip a test strip into your urine and wait. A high LH level indicates that you are the most fertile within 24 to 36 hours.

A pro-tip: make love before the ovulation test indicates you are fertile.

When to seek help to get pregnant

What if getting pregnant doesn't work out right away?

The first piece of advice is simple: be patient. Especially after stopping hormonal contraception, your body needs time to return to its natural rhythm. This can take several months. However, it is important to note that as you get older, especially over 35, fertility decreases exponentially, which can complicate the process of conception.

Although the traditional advice is to consult a gynaecologist after a year without success, it is essential to listen to your body. Do you experience the following issues:

  • Severe menstrual pain
  • Excessive blood loss
  • Irregular cycle: e.g. longer than 40 days
If so, an early check-up can never hurt.

For anyone going through these challenges, know that you are not alone.
